New book "Capitol City Fireman"

There is a new firefighting book available I think you should add to your library, "Capitol City Fireman" by Jake Rixner.

Every little kid dreams of being a fireman, most grow out of it; those who don't just want to work in a big city at a busy firehouse. These are the stories of one man who did just that. The adventures are both entertaining and informative and one can almost smell the smoke and hear the big diesel engines roar as we race from one emergency to the next. So climb aboard, and hang on tight for the ride of your life.

The book is a gritty and compelling story filled with humor, compassion, and exciting stories of urban firefighting. Written by a "fireman's fireman", Jake Rixner pulls no punches as he tells of life in the Richmond, Virginia Fire Department. The book can be purchased from the publisher here or from Amazon. It is available in paperback, hardcover, and e book formats.

Background on the author from his publisher Friesen Press:

Jake Rixner grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa. and became interested in firefighting at an early age. After graduating high school, he packed his bags and moved into a volunteer fire house in Prince George’s County Maryland in search of a career fireman’s position. After taking numerous exams he landed a job with the Richmond, Va. Fire Bureau. This is his story. Jake has written several articles for Fire Engineering magazine and wrote two chapters in a fire training text book. He has lectured nationwide on topics of firefighter training, and tactics. He currently resides in Doswell, Virginia with his wife, Julie.

Buffalo's new Crimson pumpers

Buffalo's two new Crimson Fire pumpers out training in the snow. Engines 4 and 25 went in srvice with them 12/29/10.
Firehouse.com used one of my pictures for it's 2010 Year in Review graphic on it's homepage. It is the photo on the left, and has been flipped (notice the letters on the rig and on the siren) so the firefighter is looking right instead of left.

Lt. Mike Zarbo of the Buffalo Fire Department is raising money for Special Olympics. By raising $1000 he has the privilege of rappelling off the Seneca Niagara Casino. Letter from Mike:

"This is a once in a lifetime event!! Over the Edge is a unique opportunity for
individuals to rappel off of Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, while
raising much needed funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York!

Thursday, July 29, 2010!

I am doing this in the name of all firefighters in WNY, but especially in memory
of my two friends Chip McCarthy and Jonathan Croom. It is coming up on the one
year anniversary of their death. I must raise $1000 dollars to participate in
this event. No donation is too small. It all adds up, even $1 or $5 at a time.
All money must be in by July 8th 2010. This is a great way to raise money for a
worthy cause and to have some real exciting fun. Please help by donating or
spreading the word. The more people we can get to donate, the easier it will be
to reach our goal of $1000 dollars. Let's show the Special Olympics what the
Fire Service is all about. Let's shatter the $1000 goal."

Please visit this page to donate to this worthy cause!

Please visit Buffalo Fire Local 282 "Ride for Roswell" page to donate money to raise funds for critical research and patient care at one of the nation's top comprehensive cancer centers - Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The money they raise will help researchers and physicians better understand the causes of cancer and discover new methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. In our 1st year as a team they raised over $8,000 dollars & with your help hope to exceed it in 2010.
